Leave behind the winter blues and get out and about this May Bank Holiday weekend
We are leaving behind a long and difficult winter and looking forward to warm summer days where we can get out and about. To get us ready for the summer. why not plan a few days away over the May Bank Holiday weekend. There is so much to see and do and to be honest we all need to get out and about in the fresh air to get rid of the winter blues.
There are some great activities which all the family can get involved in from cycling, walking, water sports for the outdoor enthusiasts and, if by some chance we get a few drops of rain, there is plenty to do indoors to keep us all entertained. Why not hook-up the caravan, get the motorhome on the road and dust off the tent and get out and about for the weekend. All these activities are within easy reach of one of the many caravan & camping parks throughout the country. Stay on site and use these as a base to travel around and experience the great outdoors. All our member sites are quality approved touring parks that have been inspected and graded accordingly.
Ireland’s Blueways are a network of multi-activity recreational trails, based on or alongside idyllic lakes, canals and rivers in Ireland. They provide scenic routes into the heart of rural Ireland by canoe, bike or on foot. Don’t forget to load up your bikes onto your caravan or motorhome. If you are staying in Leitrim, Roscommon or having a city break in Dublin you will be within easy access of 2 of the Blueways. The Royal Canal Blueway stretches from Dublin to Leitrim with 16km of walking & cycling trails. The Shannon-Erne Blueway is a series of scenic trails between Leitrim and Cavan with paddling, walking and cycling trails. The Shannon Blueway travels between Roscommon and Leitrim and has series of off-road cycling and walking trails and also their own ‘floating walkway’. Moving south, the newest Blueway – Lough Derg stretches between ClareTipperary and Galway. You can do it by canoe, paddle board, under sail, by bicycle or by foot.
We all know what it’s like trying to encourage our younger folk to get involved in walking trails. However, there are a number of routes which are attractive to all age groups. Enjoying a few days in Fermanagh, then you must visit the Stairway to Heaven which stretches through the bogland and is very popular to those selfie enthusiasts. If you are visiting Kerry, the Ross Castle Loop Walk in Killarney brings you through the demesne and along the water’s edge. There’s another option that’s slightly longer taking you around Ross Island, if you feel up to it. Moving to the South East and spending a few days in Waterford well the Ardmore Cliff Walk has some spectacular scenery along the southern coastline. If you are in Tipperary why not try some of the great walks around the Glen of Aherlow. With the backdrop of the Galtee Mountains you will be amazed at the number of trails for walking and cycling in the area. Finally, in Cork the Old Head of Kinsale has breathtaking views and an easy walk for all the family to enjoy.
In the ‘off-chance’ of the weather not being ideal you can always visit the many indoor attractions around the country. For the smallies why not visit one of the marine based attractions – Staying in Galway a trip to Galway Atlantaquaria is a must. Maybe you are visiting Kerry and then you should take a trip to the Dingle Oceanworld or in Wicklow the magical National Sealife Centre. All well worth a visit. Why not take a trip to Dublin Zoo and learn about wild animals especially the endangered animals. If you are in the Kilkenny area take a trip to the Reptile Village Zoo in Gowran. Meet some of the world’s rarest animals and see these amazing animals and their habitats.
We all like to take a bit of a risk and get an adrenalin rush. Why not try Zipit high wire adventure parks where you can climb into treetops, swing into cargo nets or ride a BMX across a bridge. Sites are located in Lough Key Roscommon, Tibradden Wood Dublin and Farran Wood Cork. Castlecomer Discover Park offers wide range of fun, challenging and exhilarating activities that can be enjoyed on your own, as a couple, together as a family or as a group of friends. Here you can experience tree top adventure walk and climbing wall, zipline, canoeing, archery and orienteering.
There is so much happening throughout the country this weekend. Great events and festivals for all the family, plenty of things to do and see. Take your caravan or motorhome and make a weekend of it. Maybe you just want a quiet relaxing few days after Easter and you can sit back and take it easy in one of over 100 approved and graded caravan & camping parks throughout the country.
Whatever your plans are for this weekend, have a great time and stay safe.
