Travelling to Roscommon

By Plane

Ireland West Airport is located 6km from Charlestown in Mayo and Shannon Airport is located in Clare. Scheduled services are operated by major Irish and International airlines to and from the UK, mainland Europe and USA out of Shannon.  Roscommon can also easily be accessed from Dublin Airport

 

By Boat

The main ports of entry are Cork, Dublin and Rosslare – all of which are betwen 3 and 4 hours drive from Roscommon. Brittany Ferries operates a service between Cork-Roscoff (France). Clare is also accessible via ferry from Rosslare and Dublin. Both ports offer daily services between Ireland-UK and services to France and Northern Spain.  The following companies offer ferry services into Ireland – Stena Line, Irish Ferries, P&O Ferries, Kintyre Express, and Isle of Man Steam Packet

 

By Bus

Bus Eireann Expressway/Intercity operates four Expressway services operate in County Roscommon seven days a week as well as a number of regional services.

 

By Train

There are four Train Stations Boyle, Carrick on Shannon, Castlerea and Roscommon Town operating services to Dublin through Irish Rail

Arigna Mining Experience

Chart the history of coal mining in Roscommon’s northern hills at the Arigna Mining Experience. Covering 400 years of mining history, until the last mine closed in 1990, immerse yourself in the difficult and dangerous life underground. Discover a part of Irish history that you may not know about, and get an insight into the lives of the brave locals who once worked these mines.  Before going on tour, explore the exhibition area with historical documents, photographs, and early mining equipment on display tracing 400 years of mining history in the area. Learn about the impact the industry had on the local communities over the years and watch a short film showing original mining footage recorded just weeks before the closure of the mines

Lough Key Forest & Activity Park

Lough Key Forest and Activity Park has something for every age group. Enjoy the scenic nature walks, beautiful bog garden, enchanting wishing chair, magical underground tunnels, ice house and epic views from the observation tower. Wander along the tree canopy trail or get a team together for the Boda Borg Challenge. Bring the kids to the Adventure Play Kingdom and explore the grounds with glorious woodland, a pretty lake and several islands. Go on a guided history tour, try the thrilling zipline, and drop by the Visitor Centre, the gateway to the parklands and forest.

 

Strokestown Park House

The beautifully resorted 18th-Century mansion is well worth a visit. Admire its impressive Palladian architecture. Travel back in time to Georgian Ireland and see some of the estate’s original features such as the galleried kitchen, the vaulted stables and the lodge. Meander around the walled garden and discover horticultural practices and garden architecture from the 1740s right up to the present day.

 

Boyle Abbey

Boyle Abbey, situated in the town of Boyle, County Roscommon, is a well preserved monastery that was founded in the 12th century. It was the first Cistercian monastery to be successfully founded in the province of Connacht.

 

King House

Located in Boyle, King House was built in the early 1700s for Sir Henry King, whose family was one of the most powerful and wealthy in Ireland.  Wander through the house at your leisure, encounter historical figures and sound effects while enjoying hands-on family activities. Marvel at the grandeur of the period rooms, see the Boyle Civic Art Collection and explore interactive exhibitions dedicated to the Kingdom of Connacht, the King family and the Connaught Rangers.

Write with a quill and ink, build a brick wall and visit the eerie prison cells in the basement.

 

Elphin Windmill

The Elphin Windmill is a round, three stage structure with a thatched revolving roof of organic rye. The sails are positioned into the wind by means of a pole attached to a cartwheel which revolves on a circular grooved track on the ground.

The mill was originally used for grinding corn and other grains and now houses a visitor centre where the workings of the windmill are interpreted and demonstrated. There is an agricultural museum housing a threshing machine, a winnower and other machinery associated with the harvesting of grain. It is the only fully restored windmill in the west of Ireland.
